Following the loss of some personnel in the off season, the Guildford Mavericks have taken the decision to drop down a division for the 2015 season, in order to concentrate on developing new players and growing the club.
Play-off semi-finalists in 2014, the Mavericks had run a team at Single-A until the 2013 season, and had won that division in 2010. Several of the squad have experience at that level, but it was in order to make the jump for players new to the game, that it was felt necessary to move.
Although some players new to the game can jump straight into the Double-A level, most are more comfortable with coming in at the level below. It gives them time to get used to the game, as well as learning the rules, and with less pressure that this level brings.
The added advantage of having a team at Single-A level, is that as the junior teams develop, then it is easier for the youngsters to progress into adult baseball. With the club focus just as much on the juniors, it is vital that the club runs a team at this level, irrespective of how many teams are fielded further up the BBF ladder.
